7-zip package version 23.x in the TranquilIT store

Hello,

I've noticed that the latest PROD version of 7-Zip on the official TranquilIT store is version 23.1, but on the official 7-Zip website, version 23.01 is the latest stable version. Furthermore, editing the package to version 23.1 shows that it's actually version 23.01 that's installed by this package (both the version seen by Windows and the WAPT software inventory).
Why create a package with a PROD version of 23.1 that doesn't exist when a PROD package with version 23.01, which corresponds to reality, would be more logical, except perhaps for removing the (0) between the (.) and the (1)?

Sincerely

, - WAPT version installed (2.4.0.14031)

- Administration/package creation machine OS: Windows 10

Hello Gilles,

in WAPT, the Version object works the same way as in Debian and doesn't take unnecessary zeros into account, so 23.01 becomes 23.1.

I don't know exactly why 7zip adds a zero, but in this case, the version number is normalized and it doesn't change anything in WAPT.

I hope this answers your question.

Best regards,

Denis

Hello Denis,

I completely disagree with this interpretation. The publisher can decide to release version 23.0.1, then later version 23.0.2, and then even later version 23.1.0. In that case, what would differentiate versions 23.0.1 and 23.1.0? Version numbering belongs solely to the publisher and, in my view, cannot be interpreted as one wishes; it is a form of respect for the publisher. I believe we must respect the publisher's versioning, which must have a good reason for deciding on its numbering, and this also applies to the definition of WAPT packages, which must reflect the publisher's actual versions.

Best regards,

Hello Gilles,

In Debian, as in WAPT, 23.1 is different from 23.0.1. In the case of 7zip's version numbering, there is no period between 0 and 1. If you refer to the Semver[1] standard, a period is necessary; otherwise, 01 is part of the second member of the version number, and therefore 01 = 1.

With the WaptPython interpreter, you can try:

Code: Select all

>>> from waptutils import Version
>>> Version('23.1')==Version('23.01')
True
>>> Version('23.1')==Version('23.0.1')
False
Sincerely,

Denis
