Hello,

SAMBA4 is the proven, enterprise-grade alternative to Microsoft solutions without their drawbacks.
Furthermore, SAMBA4 offers superior performance on identical hardware.
This translates to significant benefits for your users.
All European companies should seriously consider this solution to break free from the dependencies
that hinder their true control over their IT systems.

We integrated Samba4 for our public network. Currently, our Cybercenter is fully operational on Samba4 with over 4900 user accounts.
The server is virtualized under Xen with 1GB of RAM.
No issues encountered so far.
Businesses should seriously consider this reliable solution.
are 's procedures clear, tested, and approved. Samba4 domain server created in 20 minutes.

Hello,

I've been scouring the internet for testimonials regarding the use of SAMBA 4 AD DC in production.

I currently have a PDC running Samba 3.6.6 (Debian Wheezy) and am considering migrating to a SAMBA 4 AD DC.

@MairiedeChallans: After a few months of production, what are your thoughts?

Also, aren't you concerned about being forced to use RSAT? While some things can be managed via the command line, I believe that OUs and other GPOs can only be administered through Microsoft tools... Currently, they are available for free and compatible with SAMBA 4, but what about the future?

Thank you.

Hello.

A little feedback from me.

I've worked on Microsoft servers running NT4, 2000, 2003, 2008+R2, and 2012+R2 since school until about a year ago.
I learned about NT4 networking in my vocational baccalaureate program.
I discovered Active Directory in a corporate setting.
I'm a certified MCITP Server Administrator 2008.
So, I'm a Microsoft fan (don't judge me). I still use some services, like Apache, MySQL, CUPS, and Squid, which I host on a Debian system without a desktop environment.

At my new job in the public sector, I found myself managing two networks, each managed by Samba3.
Getting to grips with it was rather difficult, but later the Samba server for one of the networks crashed, and I couldn't restore it.

So I followed several tutorials to set up Samba4 to keep up with the times; I have to say, I really missed GPOs and LDAP.
Plus, my superiors refused to let me buy a server with a Windows Server license.

In short, apart from one small detail, I'm really satisfied.
Most of the problems I've encountered are permission issues.

From a Windows workstation, it feels like a Windows server thanks to RSAT for managing Active Directory.

I still have a performance issue with smbd processes during simultaneous client authentication to resolve, but in the rush, I installed Samba4 on an old computer with an AMD64 CPU (single-core) and 2GB of DDR1 RAM, so we'll see if the problem lies with the machine itself or with the configuration.

Good morning,

Thank you for sharing your experience; success stories about Samba4 are always a pleasure to read!
Samba's goal is to achieve high performance (+100,000 users).
Today we regularly encounter networks of more than 5000 workstations with Samba4 in a single site or even domains replicated on more than 80 Samba4!
Here is a Andrew Bartlet's PDF presented at SambaXP 2017 which shows the current and future Samba4 performance.

What size infrastructure do you have? How many users and how many workstations?
Regarding your performance issues, I see several points to investigate:
  • Which version of Samba do you have?
  • Generally, we advise against overusing Group Policy Objects (GPOs). For example, logon scripts can keep SMB shares open if they malfunction (Wapt can replace many GPOs) ;) )
  • Clearly your server isn't helping; you mentioned RAM/CPU, I imagine the disk performance is at the same level...
Other things come to mind; please feel free to contact us for more information: 02.40.97.57.55

Hello.

Sorry for the late reply.
My performance issue was related to file locking, which was resolved by adjusting the "kernel oplocks" setting in smb.conf, so it had nothing to do with physical resources.

Regarding the network size, it's a student network with 50 PCs for 150 user accounts.

The Samba version is repository 4.2 on Debian 8.
I will soon be migrating Active Directory to Samba 4.3 on Ubuntu 16.04.

Regards.
