Frequently Asked Questions

Connection and registration problems

Why do I need to register?
You are not required to register, but the forum administrators may restrict posting to registered users. By registering, you can also access additional features not available to visitors, such as displaying custom avatars, using private messaging, sending emails to other users, joining user groups, and more. Registration only takes a moment, so we recommend it.
High
What is COPPA?
The COPPA (Child Online Privacy and Protection Act) is a United States law that requires websites potentially collecting information about children under the age of 13 to obtain written consent from the parents or legal guardians of the children in question. If you are unsure whether this law also applies to children under 13 registered on your forum, we advise you to contact a legal advisor who can provide this information. Please note that phpBB Limited and the owners of this forum cannot offer legal assistance and should therefore not be contacted regarding this matter, except when assistance is specifically related to the question, "Who should I contact about abuse issues or legal orders related to this forum?".
High
Why can't I register?
It's possible that a forum administrator has disabled registration to prevent new visitors from joining. Similarly, it's also possible that a forum administrator has banned your IP address or prohibited the use of the username you wish to use. For more information, please contact a forum administrator.
High
I'm registered but I can't log in!
First, check that your username and password are correct. If COPPA functionality is enabled and you indicated you were under 13 during registration, you will need to follow the instructions you received. Some forums will also require that new registrations be activated, either by you or an administrator, before you can log in; this information should have been provided during your registration. If you received an email, check the instructions. If you do not receive an email, you likely provided an incorrect email address or the email was filtered as spam. If you are certain the email address you provided was correct, try contacting a forum administrator.
High
Why can't I log in?
Several reasons could be the cause. First, make sure your username and password are correct. If they are, contact a forum administrator to ensure you haven't been banned. It's also possible the website owner has a configuration issue that needs to be corrected.
High
I had registered in the past but now I can no longer log in?!
It's possible that an administrator has deactivated or deleted your account for some reason. Additionally, many forums periodically remove inactive users to reduce the size of their database. If this is the case, please register again and try participating more actively in forum discussions.
High
I've lost my password!
Don't panic! Although your password cannot be recovered, it can easily be reset. Please go to the login page and click on "I've lost my password." Follow the instructions, and you should be able to log back in quickly.
However, if you are unable to reset your password, please contact a forum administrator.
High
Why am I automatically logged out?
If you do not check the "Remember me" box when logging into the forum, you will only remain logged in for a predetermined period. This prevents your account from being used by someone else. To stay logged in, please check the "Remember me" box when logging into the forum. This is not recommended if you are accessing the forum from a public computer, such as in a library, internet café, university, etc. If you cannot find this checkbox, it is likely that a forum administrator has disabled this feature.
High
What is the purpose of "Delete cookies"?
This option allows you to delete all cookies generated by phpBB 3.3 that store your authentication and login information for the forum. These cookies also record the status of messages (whether they are read or unread) if this feature has been enabled by a forum administrator. If you experience recurring problems logging in and out of the forum, try deleting the cookies.

User preferences and settings

How can I change my settings?
If you are a registered user, all your settings are stored in the forum's database. You can modify them from your user control panel. The link to this panel is usually found by clicking on your username at the top of the forum pages. This system will allow you to modify all your settings and preferences.
High
How can I hide my username from the list of online users?
In the user control panel, under "Forum Preferences," you will find the "Hide my online status" option. If you enable this option, you will only be visible to administrators, moderators, and yourself. You will then be counted as an invisible user.
High
The time is incorrect!
The displayed time may be set to a different time zone than yours. If so, please go to your user control panel and adjust the time zone to find the correct one, such as London, Paris, New York, Sydney, etc. Please note that setting the time zone, like most other settings, is only available to registered users. If you are not yet registered, now is a great time to do so.
High
I've set the time zone but the time is still incorrect!
If you are certain you have correctly set the time zone but the time is still incorrect, the server clock is likely faulty. Please contact an administrator to report this issue.
High
My language is not in the list!
Either the administrators haven't installed your language on the forum, or the software hasn't been translated into your language yet. Try asking a forum administrator if they can install the language you want. If the desired translation doesn't exist, you're welcome to volunteer and start a new one. For more information, please visit the phpBB® website(in English).
High
What do the images next to my username mean?
Two images may appear next to your username when you view a topic. One of these may be an image associated with your rank, usually represented by stars, squares, or circles. This indicates your activity based on the number of posts you have published, or distinguishes your specific status on the forum. The other image, usually larger, is known as an avatar, which is often unique and personal to each user.
High
How can I display an avatar?
In the user control panel, under "Profile," you can add an avatar using one of four methods: the Gravatar service, the avatar gallery, remote images, or local image upload. Forum administrators can enable or disable avatar functionality and other methods they choose to make available to users. If you are unable to use avatars, please contact a forum administrator.
High
What is my rank and how can I change it?
The ranks, which appear below your username, indicate your activity based on the number of posts you have published or identify specific users, such as administrators and moderators. In most cases, only a forum administrator can modify the forum rank text. Please do not abuse this system by posting unnecessary messages to increase your forum rank. Many forums will not tolerate this practice, and an administrator or moderator may penalize you by lowering your post count.
High
Why am I being asked to log in when I click on a user's email link?
If administrators have enabled this feature, only registered users can send emails to other users via a dedicated form. This helps prevent misuse of the email system by malicious users or bots.
High

Publishing problems

How can I post a new topic or a reply?
To post a new topic in a forum, click the "New Topic" button. To post a reply to a topic or message, click the "Reply" button. You may need to be registered before you can post a message. A list of your permissions is displayed at the bottom of each forum or topic screen. For example: you can post new topics in this forum, you can upload attachments in this forum, etc.
High
How can I edit or delete a message?
Unless you are a forum administrator or moderator, you can only edit or delete your own posts. You can edit one of your posts by clicking the appropriate button, sometimes within a time limit after the original post has been published. If someone has already replied to your post, a small text box below the post will display the number of times you have edited it, including the date and time of the edit. This text box will not appear if the edit was made by a moderator or administrator, although they may provide a brief explanation for their edit. Please note that regular users cannot delete their own posts if a reply has already been posted.
High
How can I insert a signature into my message?
To add a signature to one of your messages, you must first create one from the user control panel. Once created, you can check the "Insert signature" box in the message composition form to insert your signature. You can also add a signature that will be inserted into all your messages by checking the appropriate box in the user control panel. If you choose this option, you will no longer need to specify in each message that you want to insert your signature.
High
How can I create a poll?
When you create a new topic or edit the first post in a topic, click the "Create a poll" tab located below the main editing form. If this tab is not available, you likely do not have permission to create polls. Enter the poll title, including at least two options in the appropriate fields, with each option on a new line. You can set the number of options users can enter by adjusting the "Options per user" limit during the voting process. You can also specify a time limit in days and choose whether or not to allow users to change their votes.
High
Why can't I add more options to a poll?
The limit on the number of options in a poll is decided by the forum administrators. If the number of options you can add to a poll seems too limited, try asking a forum administrator if it's possible to increase it.
High
How can I edit or delete a poll?
As with messages, polls can only be modified by their creator, moderators, and administrators. To modify a poll, simply edit the first message in the thread, as the poll is automatically linked to it. If no one has voted yet, it's possible to delete the poll or modify its options. However, if votes have been cast, only moderators and administrators can modify or delete the poll. This prevents any changes to the options of a poll that is already open.
High
Why can't I access a forum?
Some forums may be restricted to certain users or user groups. To view, write, post, or perform any other action, you need the appropriate permissions. Try contacting a forum moderator or administrator to request access.
High
Why can't I transfer attachments?
Permissions to share attachments are granted on a forum, group, or user basis. Forum administrators may have disabled attachment sharing in the relevant forum, or only certain user groups may have this permission. For more information, please contact a forum administrator.
High
Why did I receive a warning?
Each forum has its own set of rules. If you violate any of these rules, you will receive a warning. Please note that this decision rests solely with the forum administrators; phpBB Limited is in no way responsible for the rules established on this forum. For more information, please contact a forum administrator.
High
How can I report messages to a moderator?
If the forum administrators have enabled this feature, a dedicated button should appear next to the message you wish to report. Clicking on it will take you through all the necessary steps to report the message.
High
What is the purpose of the "Save as draft" button displayed when writing a topic?
It allows you to save messages as drafts that you wish to finalize and publish later. You can resume messages saved as drafts from the user control panel.
High
Why does my message need to be approved?
The forum administrators may decide to review your forum posts. It's also possible you've been placed in a user group with limited permissions. For more information, please contact a forum administrator.
High
How can I upload my topics?
By clicking the "Bump Topic" link while viewing a topic, you can move it to the top of the topic list, on the forum's homepage. However, if you don't see this link, this feature may have been disabled, or the required waiting period between bumps may not yet have been reached. You can also bump a topic simply by replying to it, but be sure to do so while adhering to the forum rules.
High

Formatting and types of topics

What is BBCode?
BBCode is a special implementation of HTML code that gives you greater control over message formatting. While administrators determine whether BBCode is used, you can disable it for each message from the compose form. BBCode is similar to HTML code architecture; tags are enclosed in square brackets "[" and "]" instead of angle brackets "<" and ">". For more information about BBCode, please consult the guide, which is accessible from the compose page.
High
Can I insert HTML code?
For security reasons, it is not possible to insert HTML code on this forum. Most of the formatting that can be generated by HTML code can be replaced with BBCode.
High
What are emoticons?
Emoticons are small images that can be used with a shortcode to express feelings. For example, ":)" expresses joy, while ":(" expresses sadness. You can find the complete list of emoticons in the post editor. However, try not to overuse emoticons; they can quickly make a message unreadable, and a moderator might decide to edit or delete it entirely. Forum administrators may also limit the number of emoticons that can be included in a post.
High
Can I insert images?
Yes, you can insert images into your posts. If the forum administrators have enabled attachments, you can upload images to the forum. Otherwise, you will need to insert a link to a remote image hosted on a public internet server, such as "http://www.example.com/my-image.gif". However, you cannot insert links to images stored on your own computer (unless, of course, it is itself an internet server), nor can you insert links to images hosted behind any authentication system, such as Outlook or Yahoo email services, password-protected websites, etc. To insert an image, use the BBCode tag "[img]".
High
What are general announcements?
General announcements contain very important information that you should review first. They appear at the top of each forum and in the user control panel. Permissions for general announcements are set by the forum administrators.
High
What are the announcements?
Announcements often contain important information about the forum you are browsing. Announcements appear at the top of each forum page where they were posted. Just like general announcements, permissions for announcements are set by the forum administrators.
High
What are notes?
Notes appear below announcements and only on the first page of the relevant forum. They are often quite important, and it is recommended that you consult them as soon as you have the opportunity. Just like announcements and general notices, permissions for notes are set by the forum administrators.
High
What are locked topics?
Locked topics are those in which users can no longer reply and where polls automatically expire. Topics can be locked by a forum administrator or moderator for various reasons. You can also lock your own topics, if this has been granted by the administrators.
High
What are topic icons?
Topic icons are small images that the author can insert to illustrate the content of their topic. Administrators can disable this feature.
High

User levels and user groups

What are administrators?
Administrators are the members with the highest level of control over the forum. These users can control all forum operations, such as permission settings, user bans, the creation of user or moderator groups, and so on. They may also be authorized to moderate the entire forum. All of this depends on the configuration made by the forum's founder.
High
What are moderators?
Moderators are individual users (or groups of individual users) who regularly monitor the forums. They have the ability to edit or delete topics, lock, unlock, move, merge, and split them within the forum they moderate. Generally, moderators are there to ensure that users comply with the forum rules.
High
What are user groups?
User groups are a way for forum administrators to organize multiple users. Each user can belong to several groups, and each group can have individual permissions. This simplifies tasks for administrators, who can modify the permissions of multiple users at once, grant them moderation privileges, or give them access to a private forum.
High
Where are the user groups and how can I join one?
You can view all user groups by clicking the "User Groups" link in the user control panel. If you wish to join one, click the appropriate button. However, not all user groups are open to new members. Some may require approval, others may be private, and some may even be hidden. If the group is public, you can join by clicking the dedicated button. If the group is restricted and requires approval, you must also click the appropriate button. The user group administrator will then need to approve your request and may ask you for the reason behind it. Please do not harass a group administrator if they reject your request.
High
How can I become the administrator of a user group?
The administrator of a user group is usually assigned when user groups are initially created by a forum administrator. If you are interested in creating a user group, your first contact should be an administrator. Try contacting them by sending a private message.
High
Why do some user groups appear in a different color?
Forum administrators can assign a color to members of a user group to facilitate their identification.
High
What is a "default user group"?
If you are a member of more than one user group, your default user group will be used to determine your default color and rank. Forum administrators may allow you to change your default user group yourself from the user control panel.
High
What is the link "The Team"?
This page lists the forum team members, including administrators and moderators, along with some additional information such as the forums they moderate.
High

Private messaging

I can't send private messages!
Either you are not registered and logged in, or an administrator has completely disabled private messaging on the forum, or an administrator or moderator has decided to prevent you from sending private messages. For more information, please contact a forum administrator.
High
I keep receiving unsolicited private messages!
You can automatically delete a user's private messages using the message rules in the user's control panel. If you receive an excessive number of private messages from another user, report them to the moderators. They can prevent a user from sending private messages.
High
I received an unsolicited email from someone on this forum!
We are very sorry about this. The email form on this forum has safeguards in place to try to identify users sending such messages. You should email a complete copy of the email you received to a forum administrator. It is very important to include the headers containing information about the email's sender. This will allow them to take appropriate action.
High

Friends and strangers

What is the purpose of my friends and ignores list?
You can use these lists to organize and sort certain forum users. Members added to your friends list will be listed in the user's control panel so you can quickly check their online status and send them private messages. Depending on the style used, messages posted by these users may be highlighted. If you add a user to your ignore list, all messages they post will be hidden by default.
High
How can I add or remove users from my friends and ignore lists?
Each user profile includes a link allowing you to add them to your friends or ignore lists. Similarly, you can add users directly from their control panel by entering their username. You can also remove them from your lists from the same page.
High

Search the forums

How can I search within one or more forums?
Enter a term in the search box located on the index, forum pages, or topic pages. Advanced search is accessible by clicking the "Advanced Search" link available on all forum pages. Access to the search function depends on the style used.
High
Why is my search returning no results?
Your search was probably too broad or included too many common terms that aren't indexed by phpBB. Try being more specific and using the various filters available in the advanced search.
High
Why does my search return a blank page?!
Your search returned too many results for the server to display. Use the advanced search and try to be more specific in your search terms and in selecting the forums you want to search.
High
How can I search for members?
Please go to the member list and then click on the "Find a member" link.
High
How can I find my own messages and topics?
Your own posts can be viewed either by clicking the "View your posts" link in the user control panel, by clicking the "Search user posts" link on your own profile page, or by clicking the "Shortcuts" menu located at the top of the forum. To search for your own topics, use the advanced search and fill in the available options.
High

Favorites and subscriptions

What is the difference between favorites and subscriptions?
In phpBB 3.0, the feature that allowed you to add a topic to your favorites was similar to that in your web browser. You didn't receive any notification when a favorited topic was updated. In phpBB 3.3, favorites are more like subscriptions. You can now receive a notification when a favorited topic is updated. Subscriptions, on the other hand, will notify you when a forum or topic you are subscribed to is updated. The notification options for favorites and subscriptions can be changed from the user control panel, under "Forum Preferences".
High
How can I add to favorites or subscribe to a specific topic?
You can add a topic to your favorites or subscribe to it by clicking the appropriate link in the "Topic Tools" menu, located at the top and bottom of topics and sometimes illustrated with an image.
Replying to a topic while checking the "Receive a notification when a reply is posted" box is equivalent to subscribing to that topic.
High
How can I subscribe to a specific forum?
You can subscribe to a specific forum by clicking on the "Subscribe to forum" link located at the bottom of the forum page.
High
How can I cancel my subscriptions?
To cancel your subscriptions, please go to the user control panel and follow the link to your subscriptions.
High

Attachments

What attachments are allowed on this forum?
Each administrator can allow or prohibit certain types of attachments. If you are unsure what is allowed or not, we encourage you to contact a forum administrator.
High
How can I retrieve all my attachments?
To find the list of attachments you have transferred, please go to the user control panel and follow the links to the attachments section.
