Hello,

we are testing the enterprise version of WAPT 2.2.
I have a question regarding the "download on" column in the "Windows Update" tab of the console.
What does it represent? Does it correspond to downloads performed by the server, a client, or something else?
We can see in the download history that the server has downloaded the updates.
However, in the list of updates displayed in the console, no date appears in the "download on" column, even though the update was successfully applied to the workstation and therefore downloaded by the server.

Thank you!

Hello smandel,

after quickly looking at the code, it seems to me that the "Windows Update"/"downloaded on" column in a machine's properties under the "inventory" tab actually corresponds to the "downloaded on" date in the KB listing under the "Windows Update" tab.

Unlike WSUS, WAPTWUA performs on-demand downloads (meaning that if no workstation requests the KB, it won't download it). The main "Windows Update" tab contains all the update IDs installed on the Windows machines integrated with WAPT. Update IDs are only downloaded if a workstation requests them, and in that case, the date appears.

It's better to rely on the installation date. That said, if the local Windows Update database has been reset (this may be necessary when it's corrupted), then the date information is no longer present, only the presence information (whether it's installed or not).

I hope that answers the question.

Regards,

Denis.

Note: In Windows Update terminology, a KB can have multiple UpdateIDs depending on the OS type and architecture. Therefore, in the list of deployed Windows updates, you might see several lines with the same KB number.

Note 2: I'll check with the internal developers to remove the "Inventory"/"Windows Update"/"Downloaded on" column, as it's misleading.

Hi dcardon,

thanks for your reply!
Actually, I'm referring to the "Download" column in the main tab of the "Windows Update" console.
I only have one update where the date is displayed, while other updates have installed on a machine but the date isn't showing up.
That's why I'm wondering what this date represents? Is it
the download date from the server, the download date from the client, or is it a bug?

Thanks!

Hello,

if the update is already present on the machine, WAPTWUA will not download it. The download only occurs if a machine requests the update ID. However, if it was previously installed, it will be displayed because it exists in the inventory, but the file will not be present on the server because no machine has requested it.
This is one of the major advantages of WaptWUA compared to WSUS, where a WSUS server pre-downloads many unnecessary update IDs that will never be requested by machines and will clutter your server's disk space.

Sincerely,

Denis

Hello,

Ah, okay!
So the updates must have already been installed on the computer, and that's why no date is displayed in the column.
Thanks for the clarification! 👍

In any case, great product! Well done!

Hello smandel,

thank you for the encouragement. We try our best. :-) WAPT has the advantage of being software developed by system administrators for system administrators, so most of the time we're quite in tune with real-world situations!

Feel free to spread the word about WAPT; word of mouth is a big factor in its dissemination.

I'm marking this topic as resolved.

Best regards,

Denis
