I have a suggestion for a very practical improvement to your solution:
Currently, there's a self-service feature allowing users to install their own applications via a GUI if they have the necessary permissions.
I'd be interested in seeing this self-service evolve into an application catalog, where end users (those without administrative rights) could choose to install their own applications from a selection provided to them. This would also involve user groups with associated permissions, allowing them to choose whether or not to install specific software.
Wouldn't this be something you could implement that would work in conjunction with your other Samba4 solution?

Yes, but you'll have to create a `waptselfservice` group with all your authorized users on each of your non-domain machines where you want self-service.
Then, you'll have to keep this list up-to-date on each machine, which is really impractical.
Our advice is therefore to implement Samba-AD to centralize the management of the users you want to grant the autonomy to install software; it's so much simpler.
In fact, Samba for managing the user and machine infrastructure, plus WAPT for managing the application infrastructure, is a good combination.
Then, you'll have to keep this list up-to-date on each machine, which is really impractical.
